Why learn French

There are huge advantages to learning French. It boosts confidence, broadens horizons and enhances cognitive abilities at any age.

⁂ A Global Language

French is spoken on five continents and is an official language in 29 countries. A key language for diplomacy, international business, humanitarian work, travel, and global organisations, it plays a significant role in international communication, culture, and travel. French is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world, with 396 million speakers, and the second most widely learnt foreign language after English, with nearly 170 million learners. Learning French opens doors to global opportunities and helps learners feel connected to a wider world.

⁂ Cultural Enrichment

French is a beautiful and expressive language that opens the door to a rich world of history, world-class literature, cinema, philosophy, gastronomy, fashion, and art. Learners can discover new perspectives and deepen their understanding of global culture through literature, film, music, food, traditions and history. French offers a window into centuries of art, ideas and creativity, providing a constant source of inspiration.

⁂ Cognitive Benefits

Learning French can provide powerful cognitive benefits at any age. It strengthens memory, improves concentration, and enhances problem‑solving abilities. Engaging with a new language encourages flexible thinking and helps learners make connections between sounds, patterns, and meaning. These skills naturally transfer into everyday life, improving focus, resilience, and overall confidence in learning.

⁂ Curiosity Fostered

Early exposure to French builds a strong foundation for future learning in children. It improves memory and listening skills and promotes overall language development, making French feel familiar rather than intimidating as children progress through Key Stage 2 and 3, and eventually GCSE. Learning a language from an early age fosters curiosity and gives children a confident, positive relationship with languages from the outset.

⁂ Confidence Building

Learning French is a practical and rewarding skill at any stage of life. Whether you are studying for travel, work or personal interest, or returning to a language you have previously studied, you will often find that you make faster progress than you expected. Every new word you learn and every conversation you have builds genuine confidence, and this confidence grows with use, enriching your everyday experiences.
